Somewhere in 2007 after a month pause I applied for a job at a small ad-agency. We won lots of clients (like citroen, baumit), made exhibit and event designs, 3-5k member conferences.
Here I was creative director with all benefits and responsibilities 8 people and a shitload of subcontractors where under my control and trained two accounts and three graphic designer from "out of the school" (almost zero) to mid-level. The only mistake was that I trusted the CEO. He was a PR specialist but an impostor, and after some time he realized that I know his real skills, so we could talk like adults and as a result I got almost full control over the projects and clients. Because of our contacts in the construction industry we had some information about how the 2008 crisis will hit Europe. So we prepared, paid back all our dept, made sure that the largest clients will stand with us.
When the financial meltdown reached the top it turned out that our ceo was embezzling money from the clients marketing budget, and form the company. The worst day of my life in that time was when I had to tell my colleagues that we can't payout the salaries, but the CEO got a new car and we are invited to his castle wedding (beauty of this that I made an amazing wedding invitation)...
We almost got in to a lawsuit with our largest client because half of their marketing budget was missing. I picked up the phone on the day when the accounting called us because of the missing invoices. This was humiliating because I was on the way owning a worldwide patent for a product and we could only avoid the lawsuit if we pass the patent ownership and not just the license for free to the client.So fuck.
