I'd highly recommend you put the money in a good index fund and not try to stock pick. Unless you really know how to read a balance sheet, investing your money in 1 or 2 companies is VERY risky.
Invewst in the Total Market Index fund or the Value Index Fund.
I'd recommend diversifying w/ 20-25% bonds as wel. The Treasury Inflation Indexed Securities right now are a very good idea, otherwise the Total Bond Market Index.
Slow and steady wins the race. Helps you sleep at night too.
