They're not cheap, but I use 3/4" to 1" thick tables throughout my house. Desk, kitchen, coffee, end tables, all clear, every room.
The dog loves it because he can see right though and the massive size of most of these surfaces doesn't eat into the limited square footage because you see right through them. It never feels cramped.
For the office it is a 6' x 4' x 1" thick piece of flat beveled glass with 6" radius corners across two rockwood 1,500 lb saw horses. it's big enough for two people to use each end but i just sit at the side with a bunch of shit on my desk.
That glass would retail for over a grand, but i'll never replace this surface (or the kitchen table, same stup with proper black wooden supports at 42"), I'll just keep paying movers to put it where i want it.
