I seriously think that LHNavs were axed when mobile became popular — I remember this happening almost overnight. Bootstrap et al dropped that pattern because (at the time) doing a truly responsive navigation was "too hard" for a lot of the frameworks, etc.
LHNav works great on widescreen desktop monitors, and possibly on tablets. And you can do more with them than back in the day as well thanks to CSS Grid/Flexbox and modern media queries. If it works use it! Obviously every site will be different, and it may not work for everything, but when you need large navigation lists it's the better use of screen real estate and user clarity.
I think it helps here with so much content, and your reduced mobile nav is just fine.
