A person born today, when they turn 20 yo in 2040, will they perceive 90s music the same way I perceive 50s music?

    • I disagree. The 50s were the dawn of the electrification of guitar and amplification. Technology was at it's infancy would take another 2 decades to discover...Morning_star

    • The advent of affordable computer based professional digital studios has not had the revolutionary impact as the 50s electrification of the guitars etc..Morning_star
    • ...I think that a 20yr old in 2040 won't perceive the 90s in the same way as we understand the 50s to be a revolutionary period for music.Morning_star
    • So will a young person in 2040 be able to choose music from any of the last 5 decades (1990-2040), without thinking it's too dated/uncool?drgs
    • I'd suggest, like fashion, the styles of music will change year by year but ultimately lack the revolution of the 50s, 60s, 70s. I suppose a comparison would...Morning_star

    • I have memories/nostalgia from these times etc. It hit me today that young people in 2040 will never get the feeling of the 90s, the way I see this decadedrgs

    • Yeah I'd have to agree with what Morning_star said. Compare stuff "the kids" are listening to these days, like Kayne West or Kendrick Lamar, is it really thatyuekit
    • different from 90s hip hop of 20 years ago?yuekit
    • There has not been this huge leap forward between then and now purely in terms of music, although maybe there will be by 2040.yuekit
    • The big change has been more about the cultural dimension, how we consume music and mix ups of different sounds and influences. No one would have predictedyuekit
    • millions of kids from USA and Europe singing along to Korean pop music a couple decades ago, And all of this driven by capitalism, consumerism.yuekit
    • People also seem obsessed with recreating/ recontextualizing past decades, and I think this will definitely continue in the future.yuekit
    • So "90s" will be a brand or flavor that people can plug into, but of course it will never recreate the true feeling of the 90s.yuekit
    • I've often wondered this - I'd love to be able to clear my head of references and listen to music anew, the way kids do. I agree with m_s hereNairn
    • I've always figured that the 80s was where music started getting really mixed up and allowed for any genre, irrespective of time. Folk sits alongside electroNairn
