With a dead hard drive (just days before retirement!) my trade-in is worth nothing, which is kind of surprising. I figured for an obsolete model the aluminum body and screen might be worth more than a functioning hard drive. Repairing/replacing will cost more than the trade-in value, and with no affordable way to reach the disk to ensure it's wiped clean, I guess it's going in the closet for now.

The Mini and a 32" LG monitor come sometime tomorrow. But with my luck who knows..

(And the Apple tech asked if I'd just updated the iMac, so they must know this is happening to older models.)

    • Are you sure that's a truly dead hdd?
      Maybe a faulty wire? Dust?

    • Also, what year iMac?aliastime
    • You can always boot off a faster external in and still use the machine. I set up a fleet of old iMacs with SSDs that way without cracking cases.evilpeacock
    • If it has USB3 or TB ports any cheap SSD drive is game for an OS.evilpeacock
    • @evilpeacock yeah that's a very elegant solution for old Macs, Samsung T5-7 500GB external SSDs under 100 euros these daysgrafician
    • It's a late 2012. Can't tell if it's the SATA cable, dust, etc. Wouldn't be surprised if there were other issues lurking in there too, it was really slow eveni_monk
    • After doubling the ram last year.i_monk
    • (shipment delayed to Monday...)i_monk
    • Before you write it off go to a local repair shop that does data recovery. You’d be surprised what they can do. Fuck Apple repair.monospaced
    • Everything was backed up, I just need to secure/erase the hard drive.i_monk
    • I mean they might fix it?monospaced
    • Can you sell it for parts to that unauthorized parts place?nb
