i guess this is what this thread is for...

last night, the gf was coming over after work to do our usual thing. parks with the dog then dinner, personal project time if either of are feeling up to it after.

I usually let the dog out front when i hear her pull up as the dog tends to be excitable, but we can trust her to stay on property.

there is a neighborhood cat we have named vincent (missing part of his ear), neighbors have named him bruce, that sometimes tries to sneak into the house when the doors are left open. he'll flop over for pets and hang out on our respective porches sometimes.

there are paw prints on all the cars in the garage. i think he waits until i use the grill for dinner and stays in there when I put it away. i never see him run out the next morning.

whatever, as long as he is warm / safe i guess.

over the last few days we had discussed how we hadn't seen him lately. as it's cold and rainy lately, we even attempted to blindly call out to him a few times to see if he was around.

well, as she is coming in, she says leave the dog inside, she sees vincent struggling with a sticker burr in the front yard.

i walk off and tell the dog to wait. not a minute later, i hear her yell my name in a way she never had. i go to the door to see her holding a sad struggling cat.

all she can say through tears is "he's broken".

his right rear leg is dangling, he's not actively yowling in pain, but this is visibly bad. i'm instantly moved and saddened.

i bring him into the laundry room and pull down a bed and towels for him to lay on and some old cat food i still had in a container.

obviously hungry and thirsty, he scarfs down a bowl of food eager for more and enough water to warrant a refill.

we tell the dog to leave him alone and he curls up. we take turns visiting him with scritches and treats allowing him to relax with a full belly as we investigate his options.

he was purring, kneading the bed, and actively loving the better conditions.

all the vets were closed, the emergency vets wanted hundreds if not a a thousand plus for an immediate repair. impossible to know how bad without paying for a scan.

one of the techs called us back while we were calling other locations with a plan that allowed us to surrender the animal under a good samaritan clause. we will not have to pay the medical, but we will be able to follow him through the system until he is up for adoption.

whether he loses his leg or walks with a limp, i guess i'm about to be a cat person.

    fucking vincent
