As some of you may know, I often buy and sell "stuff" for fun and profit. Usually I'm so far detached from a a seller or buyer that I don't care about people losing money or making mistakes.

Well, today I do. Older gentleman living near me asked me to sell his truck, too cheap. It has a blown motor but otherwise a black short wide Dodge, desirable combination. I would have bought it myself, but I would prefer a Chevy in this setup. Still though, I think about it for myself.

Honestly though, I mostly forgot about it for him. Never posted it, only offered it to one person. They weren't interested.

I see him the other day in his yard while out walking the dog and we chat, then I decide to post it last night for double what he wants. A lot of lowball offers around his asking price, but a few serious around my asking price. One eventually says show me a title and I'll be there tomorrow for asking price.

    Therein lies the conundrum...

Do I let the old man whose wife is recovering from diabetes amputation have all of this money, or do I buy it from him right now and sell it to the other guy later tonight?

An easy answer, but I just put a new clutch, flywheel, and fluids in one of my cars. I want that money. :D

    • Why not meet this problem somewhere in the middle? Offer him more above his asking, but not quite your asking?Continuity
    • You take a small profit, he gets more than his asking (and it's clear he needs it) the interested party gets a fixer-upper.Continuity

    • As long as he makes more than what he was expecting, everyone is happy. Doubt he needs the drama considering his wife's well-beingIanbolton
    • Wanting the money back for your own cars seems morally insincere though.Ianbolton
    • take a 10% cut and give rest to him, imagine the look on his face. And you know what, he'll likely thank you so much that he'll give you a big chunk of $ back.shapesalad

    • Exactly, lanbolton. It’s the timing and proximity that makes me mention it at all. I plan to help my neighbor and hope the extra funds can do them some good.imbecile

    • Give him the full price. Make his day, his year. If he's so happy he wants to share, let him decide how much. If you've saved him from bankruptcy, just smile.monNom
