For people in your life who don't give a shit about computers, and who only use them to surf the web, read emails and watch Netflix: do the planet a favor and give them an old laptop running Ubuntu. Daily use isn't more nerdy than using windows, or MacOS for that matter.

Just put a $45 SSD (500GB) a in a Lenovo R400 from 2008. And it runs gloriously. Throw in a new 3rd party battery (also around $45), and you got a winning combo.

Especially those old Lenovos are great for this.

    • The new SSD is the key, though. Tired old HDD's are the bottleneck.jagara
    • Up the RAM too.Nairn
    • That would be ideal, but for machines this old RAM is likely expensive legacy hardware.jagara
    • You need to check out your local shit PC shops :)

      Or eBay...

    • I resolved a few years back to never buy a new Laptop again after getting a Thinkpad - I think you were the same, about the same time? ...Nairn
    • .. but the new Apple Mx range kinda changed that mentality. Just waiting for the PC equivalent to come out.. never.
      Until then, second hand still.

    • I love my Thinkpad. Best laptop I've ever had, as I use them (emergency design work only). It's good enough, and if it dies, it's not £1.x grand down the drainNairn
    • Yup, no more new laptops for me. Running Windows, though. The Ubuntu ones is for my mom and my sister :)jagara
    • The Apple Mx processors will eventually get a PC alternative. Of course the is trillions to be made :)jagara
