I've thought idly lately about what would happen if someone went back in time to the early '00s armed with some memes from the 2020s, and started posting them on all the old forums everywhere.

Would they resonate then as they do now?

Would they be so popular as to easily overtake Nyan Cat, Imma Chargin Mah Lazer/Shoop Da Woop, Objection, You're the Man Now Dog, and All Your Base?

    Or would they absolutely tank?

I think 'WOULD' would have what it takes, even back then. Not sure about anything else from the last few years, though.

    • Quiznos commercials were animated memes of the nineties and early oughts. No one understood.imbecile

    • Oh, damn, I'd forgotten that one. Seems to me, we had a lot more surreal and absurdist humour in our memes, compared to now.Continuity

    • Would the dancing baby count then? Or Numa numa?imbecile
    • Most memes today seem to be from specific subcultures that wouldn't exist online 20+ years ago.i_monk
