5 lies and 1 truth from Putin’s interview with Tucker Carlson
Fact-checking the Russian president reveals inconsistencies (shocker!).

How much — if any — of what Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his interview with Tucker Carlson can we believe?

Putin, after all, struggles to recall his last conversation with his counterpart in the United States, President Joe Biden — yet can cite Russian history from 400 years ago with precision.

We listened to Putin’s historical narratives and justifications for invasion to look for contradictions, inaccuracies ... and maybe even some truth.

    Justification for invasion
What he said: “It’s not that America was going to launch a surprise strike on Russia. I didn’t say that.”

Why he’s wrong: He did say that.

Putin justified the invasion of Ukraine by alleging a threat from the U.S., stating just three days before the war began: “We also know who the main adversary for the U.S. and NATO is — it’s Russia. In NATO documents, our country is officially and directly declared the main threat to Euro-Atlantic security. And Ukraine will serve as the advanced foothold for such an attack.”
