The Montreal Expos were named after the 1967 World Exposition. Russia was supposed to hold the World Expo but backed out a few years before. Montreal graciously offered to host at the last minute and it turned out to be a great success. The next year Montreal got a baseball team while the city still had fond memories of the Expo.
The Expos were one of the finest franchises through the 70's.
So it would be pretty senseless for the Washington team to gain the name "Expos"
