Have up applied the MS updates recently?
Most of the time, when Windows (and explorer) flake out like that it is due to a driver/software library that is corrupt or missing.
You might try to update your OS.
And, after you do that, run the standard system care utilities - which is a good idea once a week or so anyway...disk clean, defrag and check disk...
Using a free space wiper is a good idea too...free's up a lot of space used by old deleted files...
Keeping your system clean and healthy helps prevent problems like this. I never experience bugs or crashes with my XP box or my Linux boxes, unless it is just something really hardcore.
