when an image is loaded, hit the maximize button (rightmost of the 3)...window expands to show all of the image.
another approach to viewing...get iView Media or iView Media Pro... does browsing, cataloguing with labels/sets, batch renaming, gallery generation, contact sheets, annotation, etc... (like ACDSee but nicer). Does take a little while to catalog a folder...but once it is done...very powerful.
