72dpi or 96dpi

I have been desiging for 72 dpi for years as most of us. But I have noticed that some are designing at 96dpi for the web. I know this is because of new monitors supporting 96, but the download time is longer. Even in Fireworks MX the default is 96 now.
Are any of you doing 96 dpi or are you still 72, and if you are 72 are you switching over.?

i dream in 72 dots per inch™

oh no, not this thread again.
I hate this thread...72dpi is a myth by the way. :)

I bumped it in response to the
"jpeg too big in flash" thread

open photoshop, specify 72 dpi and shut the fuck up.

mrdobolina
your wrong

it wont work if I do that, qburt? seems to have been working for years.

They had the same argument at my job last week and after 4 days of being all red + purple in the face everybody agreed on diagreeing.

Then try with Image Ready.. there is no DPI to specify, because DPI is totally irrelevant unless you are printing.
it's just meta data.

the point is.. there isnt DPI on the web.... its just based on how many pixels are in an image...
800x600... etc
96dpi monitor is only saying.. they can make it be a bigger resolution..... 2000x1400 yada...
dpi should be striken from the web because it doesnt exist..
just read this thread and you will see

I see what you mean, but it is fucking confusing to people. And I think you know that and you enjoy that... ;)
- unknown0
not enjoy... just get pissed off at people who dont know it.
I think when i hire people from now on i am going to ask them: What DPI do you design in for the web.. and if they anwer 72... they arent going to be hired.. and if they answer.. irrelivent.. they are hired.

qburt is absolutely right.
Your computer and your browser work in pixels, not dot per inch.
set your screen res now. guess what? no dpi settings, only pixel dimensions. Set a table's width in a web page. Guess what? no dpi notations, only pixel dimensions (or percentages)
dpi does matter when printing. crucial even.
dpi does matter when scanning. higher dpi = more detailed scan.
this thread is exasperating. I hope it dies soon.

Its almost like this cult has built up around '72dpi' and people stopped thinking.
- DigitalMe0
DOH!!!
- mrdobolina0
although, if it is irrelevant, what is the difference?
- ribit0
difference? between what?
- unknown0
the differnce is people are dumb
- mrdobolina0
I specified my tables in inches for all these years, no wonder they didnt work...
Still is kinda a tric-question qburt...
- unknown0
good... if they are smart they will see through it
