saw them in The Hague, North Sea Jazz Festival 2003
they're calling themselves "legendary"... that's a bit too much i think...
but nice show indeed, and ‘Hub’ Hubbard did an amazing 8 minute solo on bass!

stewart,
why would you say that is a bit to much? They have always called them selves legendary.
The fact of the matter is, they are.
I would like to hear why you think it is to much.

this is for the liquid mix tour, right?
- stewart0
oh sorry freshmode.
their show didn't rock the crowd like Solomon Burks' did. maybe it was because everybody was tired afther his show - The Roots were the next performers on stage half an hour later...
and their sound was a bit... eehr... old? i expected more virtuosity and variety - because it was the NorthSea Jazz Festifal...
but I have to say
1 - i had not heard them before on CD or something - maybe that's great?
and
2 - Hub (with the liquorice in his mouth) is a phenomenal bass player.

I agree that their sound is old. Maybe a bit played out. But that is majorly because they are from the old school and have had the same team for years now. Just like any band. They produce some fresh shit, but it sounds a lot like something you have heard before because you have.
You have to listen to their music. Their last cd before their live stuff and this current album was great. The older stuff is classic. It's the roots. It's like common, de la. Those kats are just a part of the culture at this point. They have a large chunk in the game.

Wish I was in the area! The roots are legendary. They are so tight live.

No, Ben Kenney's out. He joined Incubus. Martin Luther and some other cat are playing guitar now.
I've seen The Roots 5 or so times. They are amazing! I never get tired of them.
