Ok, so i get this client who want me to do 2 things:
a.) make intro on his website more modem friendly
b.) "compress" 1-min video so it's playable by 56k modems. No the problem is that all those things are sooo easy to do. His current intro was done by a moron who chose the higest setting for all JPEG images so the intro is 700K insteda of 120K... In other words all i have to do is go over the images in the library and chose the right compression. And the video he's giving me all i have to do is put it in Clener and play with the setting...
How much shoul i charge for such radicilous work?

dude, never call your work rediculous. we know it's easy because it's what we do. what's his budget, and what level of web user is he? work it. you can figure something out, just don't cut yourself short, even if you say it's crap work. ya know?

Be honest. Do it for nothing. Explain to him why he should never have gone to the other guy in the first place, propose an entirely new design and coax a nice new big contract out of him.

hey! wtf?
everything costs money, if they're willing to pay, charge!!!!
if this takes you less than half hour, bill it for the time it takes to be finished. , if they're willing more than what you think you're expecting, charge more.as simple as that.

yeah, that's what i'm thinking of doing. Originaly the guy wanted a new web site (i got this job throug a friend who does print stuff for him), but the guy also recomended by my friend (i was on long vacation then, so it could go to me) did really bad job, so all there really is is the intro which leads to old badly-designed site.

yes kodaper, exactly, the age of, "sure it's not a big deal, i'll do it for free" is way long gone. unless you are sitting pretty in piles of money, do yourself a favor and charge, you can take a bird out to dinner for it.

Keep in mind that there are pay standards, or at least there should be. One guy charges less and it diminishes the pay for everyone else. A horrible domino effect that has been started a while ago in web design with Frontpage and Web Design for Dummies.
Don't undercut yourself, you get paid for your skills and experience. Just because you could do it in your sleep doesn't mean it should be cheap. Also keep in mind that this is how you make MORE money, by getting experience, becoming more effecient, and having time to do more. Don't charge less.
As you get quicker, you should be charging more, this gives you more cash for your time and the client doesn't end up paying more than he would with Mr. Joe on the corner with no experience. Get as much as you can, and push for a new design. It will help yourself and the profession in the long run.

I say amen to mbr.

yeah, it's funny like that sometimes. I currently am helping a company build part of the Microsoft Voyager Intranet. The image changes are juvenile. It's such a joke and their taste is horrible. They basically want basic .gif's with shadows in one single table. $40 per hour. What a joke!! Funny, though as I hadn't had work in 2 years before this.

holey moley... you are a nice guy... everything mtr said and then some... i make flicks and every gaylord focker with a digi thinks they are a photo maker like me! it lowers the standard and creates more ignorance... charge the company for your skill set... you trained in it... you deserve it... AND seal the contract for further work ... he needs an honest focker like yourself...
i currently charge 1 arm and 1 leg for a photoshoot... i dont shoot daily but the cats that hire me know that they paid an arm and a leg... but it was worth it....
[whats up kodap....]

This is why there should be mandatory legal classes for designers.
I wish I did. I would have gotten paid a lot more for the work I did a while back.

PR2, u said u used a program called Clener.
does it compress video files?
how much does it cost?
- surfito0
im with carty!
in fact, that was my resolution for this year.
an arm and a leg too!
last year i didnt do that and it sucked.do this math.
say your hourly rate is 500 bucks, 4 hours minimum.
you got a fair price for that job you can complete in less than an hour.
and you have enough cash for a trip to costa rica.
mmm, take a 0 away, and switch the trip to costa rica to one to your nearest bar.
still cool.

If it was easy for the client, he would of done it himself, but he cant and there is nothing harder for him to do, so charge good.
