I'm about to buy one and this one is $20 cheaper than LaCie.

what about Western Digital? It seems to be much cheaper.

cheaper normally means louder.

i'm not looking for comfort but speed/reliability.
also at pricewatch i saw a number of really cheap deals ($140/80 GB). Those are usually external HD cases with Hd inside. What about those are they any good?

never go external go internal

There's nothing wrong with an external HD, an SCSI chain will do the trick.

Look at the Maxtors. They've gotten great reviews in the PC mags and are cheaper than LaCie (and they've got a 250GB one that I am eyein').
Also, they come with a firewire and a usb 2 connection, unlike that LaCies.

well, i need external HD because i'll need to to cary dat from school to home and back. In other words i was wondring whether the ones that are just regular HD put into external cases are "insulated" enough for the transportation?

yeah go maxtor,
very dependable when it comes nuking the drive and losing all content, cutting on and off, unable to substain long-rate transfers, and shitty customer support which always comes to the same conclusion "have you tried reformating."
So yeah 5 stars.
Voted mostly likely to be torched and beaten with a ball-ping hammaer in the EXT. HDD market.
Also nominated for biggest PITA.
