working on a new portfolio concept. i welcome all comments, suggestions, etc.

is the popup necessary?
otherwise, not bad.
- lament0
i'd remove the border around the intro image (it's coming up default blue).
otherwise, i like it - although nothing is working except the scrollbar. right?
- Duck0
border="0" on the image 'll take the border off.
nice though.

I would like to see a serif font used for that design. Just my opinion. I agree that pop up is not neccessary for that design.

not sure about the woodgrain panel... unless it's part of a concept... or if your going woodgrain then go all the way, 70's style, orange, green and naughahide... but the ia probably will work for any kind of content
- lovaboy0
not bad but...
i'm not too keen on the background. i mean, what are you, a carpenter or a web designer?
- matt250
I like. The arrows on your scroller look a little off though.
and i also agree it would be better if it was not a popup
- CycAz0
I like it.
But...
I'd get rid of the picture of the week thing. Also, the scrollbar is kinda small.

The pulsating menu makes me very sleepy... I think I should go home now and take a nap.
- le_freak0
yes, i think that i shall consider retiring the pop-up.
thanks for your feedback. and no, i am not a carpenter, but i am Canadian.
peace in the East.

It's ok. Functionally the motion work is smooth. But, here is a warning to all Flash developers. Fonts in dynamic text boxes show up very very differently on other systems. I'm on Redhat Linux, and the body type is in a very tiny Serif...it is completely unreadable.
I actually like the wood. :)
I agree the pop-up is a useless bit.
And, I'm gonna say this, as a matter of personal opinion...so take it as you wish - but there is no reason on a personal/professional portfolio site to interject your political view point or an "image of the day...".
It is non-sensical rehtoric that a prospective employer doesn't want to see or deal with.
One thing you learn in school is that your portfolio sells you. And...the ONLY reason to have one is show your work, your knowledge and your skills. If designers or developers want to involve themselves in activism or have sites which express personal opinions or beliefs then have a separate site for it. Make a blog, or a small 'personal' news site or something...an editorial site, perhaps.
But, as a person in the position to hire designers and developers, I seldem entertain sites which try to focus on bullshit rather than their actual portfolio.
When I designed and printed my Architecture portfolio it only contained design and text related to said design. It didn't have printed pages of personal opinion about worldly events. We would have failed classes if we tried that.
The web, and personal portfolio sites shouldn't be any different.
Just as a piece of advice.
- le_freak0
hmm. then how does one guarantee font size in Dynamic text boxes?
and the image is a place holder. the idea would be to display my photos in this space. but thanks for the *non-sensical rhetoric* dissertation...

:)
Anytime.
I do like the site, though...don't take my cynicism the wrong way.
Well, what font was it supposed to be?
- le_freak0
someone once said that "cynicism is an unpleasant way of saying the truth".
the font is Verdana, 10pt.
thanks for your help sp...
- sp0
Hm. Propably the simple explination is no Verdana on Linux. I can install it on here, but it's not a standard Linux font.
Helvitica and Arial (along with standard system "serif" and "sans-serif") are the normal sans-serif fonts on Linux.
So, Flash is replacing Verdana with a serif substitute.
I'm not sure if there is a way around it or not. Other than using device and platform independent type.
- le_freak0
so i should prolly just replace the Verdana with Helvetica, eh?
- neeko0
nope, cause helvetica does not come standard with a windows PC.
- le_freak0
is the magic font Arial then?
- sp0
The magic font is which ever one you feel best fits your design. I'm just letting you know that it doesn't show up correctly on my box.
:)
If you like Verdana, and your user base is mainly Windows, then use Verdana.
Although, I wonder what MAC sees?
- neeko0
get a pixel font and embed it...
