'I don't think we've seen any cinema yet. I think we've seen 100 years of illustrated text.' - Peter Greenaway
Haven't heard such bull shit in long time. Stop watching TV dramas and go to see real movies: Kieslowski, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, shit even Spielberg...
- Rementera0
do you even know who peter greenaway is?
- pr2-1
no i don't
- Rementera0
watch his films and then think about what he has to say. it's weird that he would make a comment like that.
especially:
"The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover" (His best, I think)also:
"Drowning by Numbers"
(pretty damn good)and"
"A Zed and Two Naughts" (AWSOME, but long)GO! QUICKLY!
- pr2-1
all i'm saying that
a). I don't agree that movies are not about stories
b). Those stories are hardly ever told with "illustrations of text"
- Rementera0
i think you are mis-interpreting what greenaway said.
i think what he is saying is that filmakers have yet to utilize all of the capabilities of film.
as a film lover, and *aspiring* movie-maker, these are promising words of wisdom to all of us.
there is still hope.

I've found the ones I've seen somewhat repellant
- pr2-1
yeah, but that's like blowing in the wind...
There are certian things a camera and special FXs can do. And way the audience can "read" at particula time.
Sure there a questions: how experience of watching a movie will change when we'll be able to, say, beam the light straighy into the eye... will everything have to be made from the human perspecive to compensate? Or how introduction of smell will change the experience (there are already "smell printers")? And shit like that, moreover constantly people are pushing (even though just so slightly) of normal 2-d effects...
We are stuck in our time and culture and bashing it, or pretending "what if" is somehow pretencious.

i have met Greenaway last year in Rotterdam, even asked him some questions...
'I don't think we've seen any cinema yet. I think we've seen 100 years of illustrated text.'
.....was something he said over there (during a lecture)as well..
he invited designers for his 'new' project: 99 suitcases (or something) but I believe it did not work out after all...not sure tho_
- reluct0
It would have been better if he said such a thing after he proved his point. Not before.
There's nothing more easy than being a "perfectionist" :P
- 4cY0
true. but i like the balls and sort of shameless arrogance this man had...
sorta impressed me_
i mean: why not!
someone needs to question the value of an established artform every now and then...
- reluct0
I agree, but questioning with words is kind of numbing.
I think it's kind of stupid to claim that everything ever made is shit, especially if you are also responsable for some of the shit that is being made.
- 4cY0
yea, guess that's why he came up with this global ninety-something suitcases project..
'pushing cinema in a longawaited new direction and what not..........
he did/does try__
- pr2-1
His words are more like freshman college classification rather than questiong of established artform.
- reluct0
Well trying is something I guess. Haha.
I'm sorry. It's starting to look like I'm disrespecting him. I'm only talking about the quote posted in NTB.
