I think that is crazy. I agree that there should be designated areas for smoking, but to completely ban it. Not a reality!

Oh, yaeh. Back when the smoking ban was being debated there were all kinds of groups proclaiming doom and gloom for the resturant and bar industry. Some of them opened rooftop establishments to get around it. Hey! Smoking outside!
Last time I was out there all those bars and resturants seem to be doing fine. Fuck, they may be doing too well! You have to wait forever to get a table.
How would you smokers like it if all non smokers were able to fart the most toxic farts at will and did so while you were eating your dinner. I mean the kind that linger! You know you've had those!
"Oh man, this burger is so good! Wait, what the fuck? Do you smell that? Some asshole is farting in here! Man, this ruined my whole meal. Now my clothes stink!"
Maybe I need to develop Dr. Diddys Toxic Fart pills.

this feels like prohibition

thanks for fusing your argument with a tinge of fantasy

banning smoking in resturants is easier, because smokers can simply step outside. banning it statewide... and you just 'step outside' ? not really possible.. you'll be getting a large exodus of smokers from NYC.

It will be a reality. Get used to it. A few well palced fines on establishments that don't ban smoking will scare the rest into line.
The days of the inconsiderate smoking American are numbered.
It's just a major health concern for the general public! It's like arsnic in the water, lead in paint, radon ect.
SECOND HAND SMOKE GIVES PEOPLE CANCER! FACT. Ask your doctor.

As Time Out said last week: "This is probably the worst thing you can do to the nightlife industry."
With all the problems the city has right now, this is totally counter-productive. Plus it's so un-New York. NYC is a black coffee and cigarettes, 'take care of things yourself' town. If I wanted this kind of 'lifetyle legislation' I would have moved to CA. It seesm like Bloomberg is turning all his idiosyncracies and pet peevs into law. Small bar owners will suffer the most. All around bad idea.

but car exhaust is good for you.
a little consistency might be nice.

"you'll be getting a large exodus of smokers from NYC. "
Smae thing people said in Cali. No one moved to Kentucky because they could smoke there....
Ok, maybe there was one guy...

Hey, I really view it the same way. I have a small child and I would really like for him to not have to go through Kemo due to some assholes selfish spew. Hell, I'd like for him to be able to enjoy his pancakes with out coughing and complaining about that fire smell.

i moved as well

but fart pills?

"Small bar owners will suffer the most."
Same thing they said in Cali. Bah! The sky is falling!
Smoking is a public health issue! And yes, car exhaust is way worse for you. But if you ban cars and trucks from NYC there will be MAJOR economic consequences unlike banning smoking. Will banning smoking prevent anyone from going to a bar or restuarant? What are you going to do? Stay in your one bedroom 3k a month apartment all night? No, smokers will adapt, people will still go out and hook up while drunk and will still wake up in the morning wondering who the pig next to them is.
Life will go on.

Imagine how much money could be made with Dr. Diddy's Toxic Fart©® pills!

i'm just wondering, do you express these opinions to other smokers when you see them? just a thought.

you are perfectly allowed to fart your ass off in any restaurant and disturb anyone's meal as you wish. So, that doesn't really say much for the arguement.
I just think it's pretty overboard to all out ban smoking (especially in bars), considering it is legal. I fully understand the health concerns involved, and agree.
At the same time, it's in every establishment owner's right to decide whether or not thir patrons should be allowed to smoke. The only steps a city / state SHOULD be taking is enforcing health regulations on splitting the sections to ensure non-smokers get smoke-less air.
But to all out ban the practice is horse shit. Might as well ban cars, and throwing away garbage and um.. cities.
As a matter of fact, in that people are the number one cause of air pollution in general, ban people. People are a serious health risk to other people and they should be banned.

banning alcohol didn't work in the 20's, and within ten years they had to repeal it... maybe this will be the deja vu of that
- mrdobolina0
sapph, I doubt it. You can still buy them, you just cant consume them in public establishments.

Smoking can't be half as bad as the high blood pressure caused by pointless Flash intros and full screen pop-ups. Really. Sorry - cranky - need the moring coffeee and cigarette... :)

whats the point of buying something that you're not allowed to use unless you leave the state??
