Ok, I've used Illustrator professionally for a couple of years, but I have no formal training, and now I've run into a think I've never really needed before.
Is it possible to make a gradient from solid to transparent?

Dammit.

there are ways to fake it using the transparency blending modes ala photoshop. ie, a white to dark gradient with multiply on could serve as a alpha 0 to alpha 100 black gradient.
i think.

ah i just posted this elsewhere (!), but here's how you can do it:
1. create an object with a solid fill of your opaque color.
2. copy the layer and fill the new object with a black -> white gradient.
3. select both bojects (layers)
4. in your transparency palette, click the arrow and select Make Opacity Mask
