i am getting my portfolio together, building myself a little site.
my dilemma is if I post this thing and my boss finds it, he will freak out.
anybody else in this situation. any tips on hiding a site from the search engines or keeping myself safe?
thanks

post it, but be clear about who did what. courts will always favor someone trying to make a living.

And if your boss has a problem with you showcasing your abilities and acheivements then tell him you're looking into freelance work. more importantly if your boss has a problem with you showcasing your abilities then maybe he/she is not a good boss anyways.

As therbox said, if your boss doesn't want you to showcase your abilities, maybe he isn't a good boss anyway.
If you hide it from search engines, why have a website in the first place if is not going to be visited...Be clear on the credits, and be clear with your boss: you don't plan to quit your job, you look for freelance projects to do in your own tme...

exactly. claim that you are lookin fer freelance.
that is what i do.
good luck findin a job. =)

can you block certain IP#'s from accessing the site.?

Dude, fuck it. I was quite open with my boss, saying my portfolio site this, my portfolio site that, and they kind of assumed it was up already. And that I hadn't stayed up all night finishing it for the last two weeks or so.

my employee contract discourages freelancing (although it doesn't forbid it). i used to work with a guy who got fired for posting his work up, that wasn't the only reason he got fired though.
i always feel like big brother is looking over my shoulder.

1) If it's not forbidden, then there's no problem
2) You can also say that you're learning more outside of work by building your site, and that if they don't like it then they can cram it in their various bodily orifices.

planet01: sounds like you just need to post up you work, if the boss fires you for that reason, which i'm not sure if that would be an offical reason (unless you signed a ND form) ELSE, i'd say you have great grounds for legal counsel, and besides everyone needs a good lawsuit once in their life... that could pay for lot's of new computer equipment to startup your own design shop... just a thought!

sounds like a touchy situation. i worked at a studio and was in the same senerio, so you may want to post it but leave your boss in the dark and hope they don't find it.
and yes, you r paranoid, but consider it a good thing

As someone else said, you could just say you are learning more by doing other freelance projects which in turn can only benefit your boss and work.

are you sure HE is not looking over your shoulder NOW reading these threads?

Happened to me once. Just make sure any work you post that is from your company has a copyright. Just put copyright 2002 My Company Here. That covers you.
If your boss confronts you, just tell him that as a designer it is important for you to stay active and do outside projects that do not conflict with your work agreement. Any employer who just wants their designers to be blobs outside of their jobs are clueless.

If your inviting people to see your portfolio and don't want it indexed by a search engine you use a robot exclusion tag in the meta tags. You can even specify which seach engines you wish to exclude. Do a google search for for it and you'll find more.
My 2 cents.

i guess i'll just post it - if they find it i'll just tell them the truth.
i haven't signed any sort of contract. so, legally i am safe.
of course in illinois you can get fired for no reason at all.
thanks for the tips though.
and, i'll let you all know when i get this thing up, so you can all see it and rip it to pieces. just kidding
