With the faltering economy and such. You think its dumb to work 9-5 design for free this summer before I go back to finish school? I mean I am learning I suppose, but I am not being paid. oh well.

if its going to be your last summer holiday before your working life, than I wouldn't bother. Enjoy it whilst you can.

any internship where you would learn anything is usually unpaid. if it's too hard on your budget, work part time. typically, the education you get from the real world experience is payment enough. it's not that i don't think interns should be paid - i guess you just have to pay your dues.

it wouldnt hurt for them to pay interns minimum wage at least. it'll cover their lunches and gas.

i agree shellie, but most firms won't because interns make little contributions to making a profit. in some cases, the hand-holding actually takes away from the productivity of those that have to manage them. sometimes, it's all about making money...
doing my internships killed me. i didn't understand how you were supposed to get by on no money. i finally got a paid one but i learned nothing there. the freebies are the ones that i still draw knowledge from today.

You are going to contribute in some way at your internship. Any company should pay you something, min. wage, or lunch and transportation, only fair.
I say if they won't, go somewhere else. If the knowledge is of real value to you, which overcomes the lack of compensation, then, problem solved.

if you need hand holding, you shouldn't have that internship.
they shouldn't have to pay someone to babysit you. If you're an GA for instance, no one should have to show you how to find quark on the mac.. that's what school is for. An internship you should dig and and use everything you've been studying for almost 4 years and absorb everything thats going on in the work place.
I swear to god once i had this dumb broad come to me like.. "my computer is broken it wont turn on".. turns out she kicked the chord out from her monitors. Im not asking for computer genius' here.. just someone with a clue.
For the ones that cant be just a little independent after given some instructions and directions should be happy stapling, filing, and making copies. :) The others should be pulling their weight and getting their minimum wage and experience.
Back in the day i think internships actually meant something, because people truly left with some good experience. Now i just think college students think of it as another fuck off class.

I'm sorry but, paying dues ego trips like that have nothing to do with the quality of work that you produce. Usually interns are underpaid and treated with no respect.
Myself and many of my friends that were interning, were designing on projects for nike and macromedia.
Now, if you are working on projects that bring in tens of thousands, why wouldn't you get paid?
All I'm saying is that if you are qualified for a job, you should get paid right.

i agree, if you are qualified you should get paid. all i'm saying is that if you don't love design enough to make some sacrifices, it probably isn't for you. never turn down the opportunity to learn though.

gauge how cool the people there are too...i worked an unpaid internship but my boss bought groceries for me and take me to lunch and stuff like that...i also did good work for them...if they cant afford to pay you but you do good work they may find other ways to compensate...tho i must say i worked a whole summer full time for no money and i had zero fun b/c fun is expensive...so weigh your options carefully
