wow, pc's really have come down in price.
the both have good specs.

my only suggestion would be to build your own if you know how (of want to try).
Pro's:
-you know exactly whats in it.
-OEM parts generally are of cheaper quality.
-you get to have a cool looking case if you want (or save the money if you don't).Con's:
-if anything goes wrong they'll fix it (which is FALSE when dealing with BB... my friend bought an HP from there and didn't see it, or a replacement, for 8 months).
-you don't have to build it.
-you get to pay more! whoohoo!my advice, build your own or have someone build it for you.

yeah...the dvd-rw drive is really tempting...but it is 300+ more. and i'm thinking the dvd-rw stuff is gonna get better and cheaper anyway...so i don't know if it is really worth getting right away

jpea, i'm looking into that too actually...trying to gauge the price for the same specs, etc.

any suggestions on where to get parts would be greatly appreciated!

Ya, Id build my own, the money you will save can go towards a dvd rw. Great for backing up your stuff, a must have.

go to the smaller family run pc shops, great bargains to be had. Chinatown in Sydney is the best place, those guys love a haggle. Dont know if chinatowns in the us are the same

right here you can get a separate DVD+R for about 160 euros..
300 bucks is way out of line.

thanks for the advice...i'll be visiting some local computer shops and searching the web massively over the next couple weeks.
no chinatown around unfortunately. i could use the cheap labor though (just kidding) ;)

why not aim for the 3Ghz? I know I'll do that next week...

Flatulence,
Here I have a list of components that I made for my additional workstation. Take a look at it, it has top notch components and the price is between the two you mentioned. You can save additional 50-60 bucks if you find a case you like here: http://www.colorcases.com
The link for component list is:

Cheers.

btw if you go to ColorCases.com I mentioned make sure you check out the Minion case. It's a very nice case (cheap $45) plus additional $20 bucks for the powersupply. Make sure you go for the 350W or above power supply.

Oh I forgot, if you decide not to build your own comp, this is the company that is just simply amazing. They received so many awards from PC Magazine and PC World for both the best quality and best price computers. And they even have the comp you might be looking for as well.
and the comp I would recommend is:

I gotta tell you Burty that whenever I see Dell comp on someone's table I just can't get away from that horrible plastic (chinese) shitty feel when I work on them.
