Has anyone seen those Open-Source commercials put out by IBM? For Linux?
It has a kid in a white, matrix-esque room with people talking philosophy music computers, etc.
He learns everything.
What's his name?
Linux
Then it shows the IBM open sponsorship.
I thought it was interesting that a company is putting out open source commercials. If anything, it will bring a much needed awareness and get shitty software developers (Microsoft) to get their shit together.

you've apparently never tried to use the gimp as a production tool.
shitty software? no, you're wrong. there's always a trade off.

You took a very broad topic and tried to focus it on one very small topic? Nice. That's the way to argue.
If you want to focus on the topic so much, look at windows. It's in a constant state of attrition as a new bug, hole, security risk, buffer over-flow is found every week. And like I said, even if the campaign doesn't make open-source a "winner" it will improve the commercial stuff. Microsoft needs competition. Consumers need choice.

And how shall you retort?
"I use a MAC!"
Right, but then you're the one that wanted to straight shoot to one piece of mediocre open-source software, so I straight shooted to a huge, blaring, laughable piece of commercial product.

yeah it's fucking really cool. I liked that.

actually, I do believe MS needs competition. However, I don't believe in the Open Source idiology as it stands today.
Before you ask, I have two towers on my desk, one running w2k and the other running a distro of SuSe. I've spent hours tinkering with the Linux box, and have enjoyed it. However, excluding it's server applications and having it as a hobby, it's useless for me.
As far as security goes, well, we could argue it all day. I'll wrap up my position like this: Windows is an easy target because of it's overwhelming prevelance in the marketplace.
I've run windows machines since the mid 90's. I've never used a virus scanner, always kept up with product updates and have NEVER had an infected machine. (knock on wood)The example I presented about the gimp is, in my mind, characteristic of huge hurdles with open source development. Because real developers, not tinkerers like me, all clamor to work on the sexy projects and ignore the low profile stuff. There's no oraganization or flow to the development. It's disorganized, and important bits go without the attention they need and deserve. Usability is constantly a casualty of this development process.
I'll reiterate, I do want to see MS get a real competitor. I don't believe one exists today.
like I said before...there's always a trade off.

yes, i am the one who took a pot-shot at one piece of software and YOU are the one who use a huge mindless generalized brush stroke to categorize Windows developers as a whole...
"If anything, it will bring a much needed awareness and get shitty software developers (Microsoft) to get their shit together."

I don't agree that Windows is such a security risk because of it's market saturation. It's bloat, dead-line, feature freaks, and general sloppiness.
RPC, ActiveX + IE, and so many buffer overflows it makes one wonder how a piece of software could be released. Entire countries are saying "No" to windows.
BUT, You're right, I could argue security all day :p And you also bring up some good points, DigitalMe.
----Back on track----
The commercial was pretty artfully done. I think the way they chose to inform a viewer was pretty good. I watched it for a while thinking "huh? where is this going?"...then I got it.

btw: my reaction to your original post was based on years of dealing with the rigid and inflexible arguments of open source advocates. Reading my response now, I realize I should have been more expository of my ideas, and not deliver the sophomoric response that I did.
can't we all just get along...(sniff, sniff) :)

So what deviates from my "huge mindless generalized brush stroke?"
Powerpoint?
Outlook?
Frontpage?
Windows?
MS-Sql?
Office?
Internet Explorer?
ISS?
WMP?
