A "friend" of mine refered 2 guys to me to create a "functioning" clothing retail site with a merchant account shopping cart.
They said they didn't have all their information together and they just wanted to estimates from me on how much I would charge. Btw, they said they wanted the site up and running by 11/26.To be honest, I knew going in that this was more than I could do (I've never done an ecommerce site before) so I was going to ask a couple of my developer friends to help me out (with a portion of my earnings going their way).
I explained to the 2 guys that since they were looking for a an ecommerce site (which I knew take alot of time preparing the database scripts) I'd charge them $750 (that excludes the other maintance charges they'd eventually incure to keep the site up).
They said that my price was too high and that they found someone else who would do it for $350.
What are you guys thoughts about this?

$750 for an ecommerce site? you high?
they must be smoking something also for offering to give you $350.
you should be charging AT LEAST $3,000

My ecommerce guy won't do an ecommerce site for under $5 grand.
I'm coming to the conclusion that friend referrals are trouble.

granted I don't know the details of your project but I have yet to do a ecom site for under $1000.00 and even then that was at a special rate as other arrangements had been worked out.
if they found someone to do it for $350, let them have it. Some people will pay for top shelf work. Others settle for less.

$350 would be a waste of effin time.
hey maybe it s a70's price. no offense :)

Thank you everyone who commented!
Like I told these 2 jackasses last night ...$750 is "under cutting myself". I knew that a quality ecommerce site would go for at least $1200 or better. But being that I've never done one before, I figured that I would have to bite the bullet and ask for $750.
To the person that said that "friend referals were trouble" ...I totally agree.
The "friend" told me that I should have agreed to do the site for less being that I didn't have the experience. In othe words doing something for nothing.

Even $1200 is a complete joke. I think you'll realize this once you start a full fledged ecommerce site. It's incredibly deep and complex for a beginner so even if you're on top of things you'll still spend WAY too much time figuring it all out.
I'd say $1200 if it was just a carbon copy of another one you did and you just changed a few things to suit the new client.. Other than that, move on.

don't bother.. offer to set up oscommerce for them for $600 (takes about 3 hours for experienced, about 6 -8 for non experienced)... for custom, a few grand minimum.

Thank you IP for sharing ...
It turns out these guys "said" they're hosted by
www.godaddy.com and they also promote/produce ecommerce sites. Now heckle and jeckle said that they reservered their site's name (Edssports or Edsports) but when I searched for it ...its available.I told my friend about this and he said that I should reserve the name and then sell it to them for $500!
