run fsck.
osx is unix, all the file-system and maintenance tools you need are available to you via shell.
careful though...some tools shouldn't be run while the root file system is mounted...it might be good to force fsck on reboot.
norton apps suck...they are usually buggy and eat up system resources. i would recommend just using the core utilities built into darwin/unix.

I think Defragmenting isnt required as much in OSX because of the way the filesystem works (it automatically optimizes the file placement).
Norton Utilities is a bit controversial right now... some say it can cause more problems than it fixes?

i'm not sure what filesystem structure darwin uses (reiser, ext2, ext3?) but you're correct, unix/linux doesn't require defragmenting like windows does. they are different systems entirely.
what is the problem with the drive, anyway?

Defraggin in OS X does exist, but the system does it on its own anytime a file of 20MB or less is opened or utilized the first time, Mac OS X will naturally defrag the file (which is why some small files take a little longer to load sometimes). It will only do this once because the system naturally manages that file on its own block from then on. In other words, defragging is probably not the solution you're looking for.
Other than file permissions, download http://www.versiontracker.com/ph…
and then run the 'redo prebindings'

there is no built-in defrag in OSX...you need...:
