thanks abstrakt, i failed to mention that the weather is another big reason i want to move to cali. i can't stand texas weather (actually, there are several things i can't stand about texas), and the sun has always been quite effective anti-depressant, so i'll take that into consideration... my only concern with la is the congestion, which is something i'm trying to escape here.

escaping congestion in california would prove to be very difficult.
there are 34 million of us.
- mitsu0
by congestion, i'm really referring to traffic... but i can tolerate it. weather is a bigger factor for me.
- abstrakt0
yeah dont' move to socal to escape congestion
- mitsu0
what i'm trying to escape is flat lands, bad, unpredictable weather, people with texan accents, and the staleness of a city/state i've lived in most of my life.

NorCal has trees, SoCal does not.
Both areas do have hills though. And both areas have big mountains not far away.
If you like beaches - both are cool. But you can't swim on NorCal beaches. Well... you can - but you'd have to be somewhat crazy.
SoCal has nice - but crowded - beaches. Especially in San Diego.

socal sounds like what i'm looking for. then i can take roadtrips up north for some good mountain biking in my spare time.

NoCal has great mountain biking everywhere. Where I grew up in the east bay - I used to ride from my house, up Mt. Diablo, and come back for lunch.

san fransico can have pretty shitty weather a lot of the time... whats up with having to wear a heavy coat in august?
LA/san deigo has 10 overcast days a year and about a week of rain. thats it.

Point Lobos is I think the most beautiful part of California. There's some photos on my site if you wish to take a look. They're under the first column "thoughts" and down a ways under the date 01 20 04. Sanat Barbara is great too.

ontario, ca - smells of cow poopie every morning. great way to start your day

mike, i'd like that, hopefully we'll be in the area when we visit in a few months.
shane, those are some great shots and a 2a visit would also certainly be a pleasure if time permits.

if one more person comes to california we're gonna break off and sink into the ocean.

Three words, San Luis Obispo. Once you go there, you'll never want to live anywhere else. The only problem is whether there are jobs there. So, if you can telecommute, go to SLO. It's a little piece of Heaven on earth.

there's tons of places to mountain bike in socal. the los angeles area has to be one of the most versatile areas there is. within a 1 1/2 hour driving radius, you have snow, forrests, desert, ocean, foothills, mountains, and in a little over 2 hours you have Mexico. mexico is poor, yes, but it has amazing beaches and really cheap stuff. i love to go camping in the joshua tree area in the desert. i'm a big fan of the desert. but sometimes when i want a greener atmosphere, i drive for an hour and a half and go to santa barbara. one time i drove to red rock canyon and camped. heres a picture i found. it was much dryer the time of year i went...
look at those trails. those would be fun to bike.
so yeah, southern california has it all. the biggest problem is the traffic and the smog, but you can avoid a lot of the smog if you live near the beach.
