for what its worth: I brought it up because this morning I was writing an article on Ireland's Draft Allocation Plan under the emissions trading scheme published by our EPA yesterday. It is a requirement of the EU Emissions Trading Directives being implemented under provisions of Kyoto - yes they are ratifying Kyoto regardless.
and to amuse myself while trudging through the report I daydreamed about the worst-case scenario, film scriptesque possibilities.......

sorry they're not ratifying Kyoto but adopting the provisions of Kyoto. For Kyoto to be legally bind it requires US/Russia but nothing stops anybody from going ahead and doing it anyway hence the EU yadda yadda........

v3nt, are you seriously worried about 7mm a year! Christ, it'll take 140 years to get anywhere near 1 extra metre!
Also, why is it that in news reports on "Freak" weather, they almost always say, worst/hottest/wettest weather for 80 years! Were people worrying about global warming then?!
Now believe me, I'm not an advocate of doing nothing, but lets put things in perspective!?
Treehuggers need to start worrying more about the economy, get a job and stop freeloading their A*sses and burdening countries even more than your average Joe!
Raaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

few mm doesnt seem like much to you but

The main problem number of people in this world! More people in the world = more affected by disaster! China has the right idea! one child per family!
Wow, cant help but feel sorry for those islanders though! That'll learn 'em though - I was taught at an early age the tale of the man who built his house on sand...need I say more!
- lowimpakt0
please, go on.

listen...I'm all for crying over the unforunate, why not! Its not like we've got our own personal disasters to deal with!
I am environmentally aware, and I dont knowingly go out of my way to over pollute the world, but the articles I have read on this thread are completely over sensationalising things!
In 20/40/60/80 years, of course things are going to change, but we are not going to be face with twelve monkey'esque scenarios! Have we not learnt anything! All you have to do is look at the authors/writers and Sci'fi novelists 50+ years ago! Any of that true?
Sensation sells - Big tidal waves and earthquakes and "freak" weather stories sell newspapers, why not jazz it up a bit to sell more copies!
The most worrying thing is what will we use when all the oil runs out? Why aren't electric cars more widely available?
I bet the same treehugging tw*ts that moan about Global warming were on the Miners side in the eighties! hypocracy is rife my friend and selfishness is not nearly utilised enough!
I am sure I can think of more stupid arguments but this is getting too long!
Anyway, back to the man in the sand....!

well constructed response, cheers.

That's the whole probelm. you don't have to go out your way to polute 'the world'. Its built into our daily life.
Its a pain in the ass to take extra time to sort and post your garbage into coloured bins, knowing that only 50% will be reused in the next 20 years.
Organic or sustainable farmed foods are expensive to produce and tf. to buy... Its coz we have got so used to saving money buy just throwing things away.
Im all for the economy. I just think it needs to reconsider, or be re-regulated to limit waist... It will just take time for it to be integrated into our present system. We need to do more than have a paper recycling bin in the corner of the office. And do you think we should wait for oil to run out before we find something else? Isn't that too late? We need oil for more than just fuel, how will me make plastics/rubber or even run engines whatever powers them?

v3nt - Are you a qualified geologist?
- lowimpakt0
actually yea, I wanted to know the geological implications in all this. I do know about marine/current influence on climate but nothing about geology - can you explain moth?
cheers
- v3nt0
no i don't study rocks do you?
