for print media how much does it matter what type of files you are working with? Example. will it make that much of a difference if my photoshop image or illustrator file is rgb or cmyk for printing to any cmyk printer. if so what would get me the closest print out to my screen image. What should i be working with?
thanks

You can work in RGB mode. Just be sure to convert to CMYK before you send it to print.
rule of thumb: once you convert a print file to CMYK, never convert back to RBG (you lose information in the process).

Start with CMYK is better for print media. Converting from RGB to CMYK doesn't always guarantee color accuracy. A hassle to if your client is picky too. Careful when your converting, 1c black text might have other values in them.

you must be talking about printing to an inkjet right?
in this case most inkjet printers prefer RGB. There are a bunch of reasons why... but you can look that up.

when converting from rgb to cmyk
do like this
rgb > lab color > cmyk

rgb > lab color > cmyk

when color correctness is critical, you will notice less of a shift.
go ahead, give it a try
