I remember my design teacher made us cut rubilith and use rapidographs and draw entire alphabets of Helvetica and Bodoni with black ink. Mind you, there were already computers and design programs back then. I thik it was back in the days of photoshop 3. Anyway, I asked my teacher why in the world we needed to know how to use those things, if no one used them in the real world...
Then in her design-sage tone she said to me: "well, you never know when there's going to be a black out or when your studio will get all its computers stolen, and you need to be prepared for that".
To which I said... "err... and what about all of the other days when that doesn't happen...??"
She didn't like my answer...

Why are they french curves anyway? Anyone know?
The flexible curves (the blue ones) never got smooth curves. I use it to hit friends when they come over my apartment.

the flexible ones are called "Flexicurves" oddly enough....

Last used in 98?? Blimey, I last used one in 88 until I started using FreeHand 1.0.
Other designers tools consigned to the dustbin include:
- the typescale (yikes)
- Rotring pens
- Letraset (£8.00 per sheet once upon a time)
- Omnichrom
- LetrastudioAhhh, brings it all back. Anyone think of any others?

I never knew that they are called french curves....

I was thinking along the same lines as royal618, when I read the header for this, thought I was going to read on about the curves of the french ladies, like those of catherine deneuve or something...
