thanks for clearing that up, rabattski!
has it got something to do with media/movies?
why do we all collectively assume it is nazi?
i for one dig the fraktur type as well!
- Gorbie0
Yeah.. "Monumentalism" as I think it's refered to.
neo-neoclassical architecture of absurd proportions.
- Gorbie0
thanks for the clarification, rabattski.
- rabattski0
no it had mainly to do with printed matter such as books. could be that they used it in the beginning though since the fraktur was officially banned on 3. jan 1941.
good question though why we collectively assume it is nazi. have no idea. but living in germany make me look at a lot of stuff differently.
- DutchBoy0
rabattski, no worries, in the summer I live in Germany as well, it is called Zeeland!
(damn tourist invasion)
;P

lmao!

Well I see I can't just open threads with "font" or "type" in the title anymore. I missed out. Thanks to gorbie for cleaning up. Now, on your fraktur sign... let me give it some thought.
- DutchBoy0
rabattski, that last email you sent me is completely blank.. not even any headers..
??
- DutchBoy0
no wait, it loads now!
Mail is acting up lately..

Gorb - your sample is a simplified "textura". My first thought is FF Brokenscript, my favorite in that class.
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/fon…But yours is even simpler. Will look around.
BTW, John Butler's blackletter page is excellent, even if a lot of the links are out of order.

lmao!! gorbie!
:'D

Keep in mind. assuming this is older subway system signage, it is almost surely not based on a font. We'd be looking for digital fonts that are based on similar forms.
- Gorbie0
:)
Thanks for the link Typo. I'll run through that page.
Brokenscript is quite a bit different, though.

Here's a better match by the freeware blackletter master Dieter Steffmann.
- Gorbie0
yes - I realize that.
It looked to be done by hand aswell. But I remember a couple other stations having similar lettering.
was someone going round berlin - doing the lettering from memory? That would be funny.
"I think the 'L' looks like that?"
- Typographica0
"was someone going round berlin - doing the lettering from memory?"
Oh I think that's exactly how it happened, actually. Perhaps the tiles were painted prior to installing, but "by memory" is how signpainters do their work. It's a marvelous thing and so easy to appreciate in our digital age.

sweet jesus!
excellent resource!
thx, typo!
- Gorbie0
Easy for me to appreciate, yes.
but in Germany - Die Land of Standards?
