In winXP (and maybe earlier versions too) you can put your favourite shortcuts/folders/whatever as a pop out menu/bar on any side of the screen ala OSX dock but without the cheesy zoom effects. Neato!

is this in ie? firefox? eh? how do you do this?

Now, it's in windows. Just grab a folder and drag and drop it to the "edge" of the desktop. THen you can set icon size, text labels on/off etcetera. You can have multiple folders on the same bar. To make it popup just set the properties auto hide and always on top.
If you want your IE favourites folder in there, drag a copy of it. It's located in documents and settings.

I always did that with my apps in windows.

wait, I'm sorry, you don't have to drag a copy of it, just the folder itself. It will act as a expandable shortcut.
