i need another computer for testing websites, and i was originally thinking of getting a cheap PC notebook(so that i could run IE5 etc.)
but, now i am thinking of buying an iBook with virtualPC instead.
does anybody have experience with that? is it still going to be super ass slow or what?
or is it enough for what i am doing with it?

It isnt real fast, but usually OK for testing, plus you can run several different Windows versions (and Linux?) at once.
Another option is to login remotely to a PC over a network using VNC or Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection.... I have a Lacie Ethernet Disk, which runs XP Embedded... I login to that when travelling to test in Windows... Redraw speed isnt real good over broadband connections, but the actual PC is running fast.

Hey there -
I've been running Virtual PC on a Powerbook G4 for over a year now. It's not perfect but it's worth more than buying a seperate machine.
It's slighty slower than normal, especially when running big apps, but it's surprisingly stable and (from my own experience) is 100% compatible with all sorts of PC software I've thrown at it.
I haven't tried a Half-Life or major 3D project in Maya or anything, but for cross-browser compatibility and other design projects, it's pretty cool.

have another oc for testing, wayy easier to just have virtual pc running on my powerbook. i dont run any apps in it though besides the browsers. it is a little slow... worth it though.
has anyone had any issues with viruses through using virtual pc?

I would not reccomend using any app bigger than Word with Virtual PC if you want your Mac to remain crash-proof. Virtual PC is an emulator. In short, that means the firmware normally in a windows box is replaced by lines of code. Your G3 or G4 is still doing the processing.

It's kind of like using a small trowel to dig a big ditch. It's slow, but ti'll get the job done.

i use it only because i don't have a PC box that is any faster than VPC...
i think if i had the money, i would buy a 500$ pc like my friend that i could play games on and use for development...
his computer is great! so fast and so cheap...
that's how i like them...computer's that is...

update:
i have been using virtualPC for a couple of months.
It actually works very well, although it is slow. However, i am only using it to test 1 page at a time, so it is sufficient.
an aside, it wont run on a g5 yet, so i have mine sitting in a cardboard box right now gathering dust. isnt tah a shame?

just make sure you get a G4 iBook and max out the memory to a 1.25 GB. you may not need to max the memory out just for browsing but it takes up some of the slack.
