I tried updating my os on the weekend from 9.2.2 to 10.3. It didn't work.
My mac is a old B&W G3 and I was trying to install using a G5 install disk. All my specs are fine (well, not fine, but enough to run 10.3) and I did have 10.2 running before. (don't ask me why i went back to 9) so not sure why I couldn't install.
Is it because it was G5 installation disk? is there any differnce between these and any other 10.3 install disk?

you cant use those disk to update anything but that model mac. you must use a retail cd set. there are differences, it check to see if your mac is running a same or higher version of the Os it came with. i was told this was the case by a apple care rep....

yeah, you can't use a G5's disc, have to go with the retail pack. it has certain firmware updates and such for the G5.

Cool, thanks. thought that might be the case.

I did it with iBook G4 discs (OSX.3 on B/W G3 350MHz) - no problems.
Could it be a simple DVD / CD-Rom thingy? I know it sounds stupid, but it could be because the disc/s that came with G5 is a DVD (I'm not sure). FYI, the iBook installs are CD-Rom.

I've got a DVD drive, so its def not that : )
nah, i think its cause the G5 is 64bit and there must be something to stop it installing on anything else... Good to know you did it with the G4 disks, least I know it works....
