I think Intel just came out with tons of new shit. I would use teh new stuff. PCI Express, new chips without those damn pins that scare the shit out of you when you put them into the mother board, and go with the SATA drives as well...supa fast! hmmmm now I want to rebuild my rig

just bought a 3.4gHz 1GbRAM dell with a 17" flatscreen for about $1800, it's sweet.

I recently bought a AMD, way cheaper, reliable. you won't notice any difference.

a 3.0Mhz AMD brings you better performance than Pentium 3.0Mhz,just my opinion.

p4 2.8 for the processor oc'd to 3.2 . buy an asus motherboard which I think reliable. MSI is cheaper and gives several options too. I won't be thinking any other name for motherboard.
1gb ram 3200 mhz I presume. err western digital as hdd but make it SATA. ide is going to die soon.I have heard nvidia has come with a new card, I dunno I have my 9500 pro radeon. it is nice.

I don't know how AMD is supported by our graphic softwares, but that's why i'd stick to INTEL...
I heard the AMD64 is really fast for gaming... lol

i have a AMD Athlon 2600+ XP with 333MHz FSB and 1 GB of PC2700 DDR RAM on an MSI nForce2 motherboard. This is my everything computer. I do most of my work on it. I don't play any games on it. If you're doing basic stuff like in photoshop, you wouldn't need anything that fast, I've worked with 6 megapixel pictures on mine and it works fine. If you're doing 3D, a dual processor setup or athlon64 would work nicely. If you're looking to build an everything computer, I would look into P4's with hyperthreading, you can do a lot at once with it. If you run into problems while building the computer, you should goto www.anandtech.com 's forums. they're usually helpful. you can also look into overclocking there if you want to save some money and still have a fast computer.

listen to v74!! New shite is on its way!!!!!! PCI Xpress sound fuggin hot, plus everything is getting away from the old flat ribbons of yore. DO it DO it!

i have a P4 1.5 GHz, 256MB RAM, 120 GB SATA HD, nothing else worth noting.
used to have 512MB of RAM but one of my cards crashed. bitch.
yeah go with the hyperthreading P4's, and lots of ram. and XP is the most stable windows os. yeah those IDE ribbons will be gone soon, SATA is so fucking fast. some USB's too, youll need. prolly no more than four really. a firewire card?
are you going to use windows? linux?
- adrian0
i built a machine with a 2.4 Ghz P4 back when that chip was Intel's fastest. Have a gig of ram and 64 mb vid card. It runs everything mostly fine, but if I were you I'd get latest chip like everyone else suggests.
I still have mixed feelings about the 21" Sony CRT i bought - beauty screen but big as all hell. On the other hand, LCD screens with that kind of resolution are still a hell of a lot of $$$$$$$. Personally I wouldn't trust a cheap LCD screen.

"are you going to use windows? linux?"
haven't decided yet. i hate microsoft with a passion, but i just dont know that much about the linux systems. And the only reason i'm thinkin PC (yes i know everything is technically a "PC", but i think everyone knows what i mean) is that i've been raised on'em, usin them since i was tike. The move to mac is tempting, but i love the familiarity, and hte blue screen of death is kinda warming... hehhe

just ordered an dell dimension 8400, tricked right out 3.4 P4 w/ extreme hyper-threading, and the new ati x800 256 meg vid card....
cant wait,
it's for work.....honestly.
- soynutz70
i've got a dell right now, i don't think i can stand another pre built machines, all that crap that you dont need or want on it f**ing with the system. thats why i've been lookin into building my own.
