I'm looking to do a small run (about 500) of a 16 page zine i'm currently designing. And I need some help finding a good, affordable printer. I'm in NYC but I think a printer anywhere in North America would get the job done. Any recommendations or steer-clear-of's would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

color? or more gritty 'zine likeness? ya' know, like photocopy style.

i'd like to do color, but with a matte finish on thick paper....that's what i'd like to do, but i have a feeling i'll be compromising because of the $$. i guess that's the zine way.

yeah, i think you're going to run into cost issues with the tone of your typing : )
hmmm....not sure.i would say just go to kinkos and load your own paper in the copy machine, but that would cost a fortune. printing them yourself would take forever. where do you work : )

i do web for usa network. i know what you're about to say....do it FIGHT CLUB style. yeah...the job is so corporate i'll probably get the axe after running off one copy. But the main thing is i really want color. i'm really curious what my options are and how much it's going to cost. i'd like to keep the 500 run at around 500-600 dollars. coming from web limits my knowledge of printers.

unfortunately i'm right there with you as far as far as in web/know shit about print. sorry i'm not much help

unfortunately at the quantity your doing I don't know any printer that will be able to do that for a $1 a piece or less. honestly If you went to kinkos it would probably cost you more than that to do it in b&w!
I can maybe give you some advice if you give me some more specifics. when you say 16 pages are you meaning 8, 11x17's double sided and folded in half? Are you planning on stapling?

these guys were the cheapest I could find when I used them a few years ago. Give 'em a call:

as far as size goes. i was planning on 8.5x11 folded and stapled. but was hoping to do a not so run-of-the-mill sized, like something square or letterbox sized. i just want places and prices so i can make an informed decision.

thanks grumpy...can you tell me:
- how much you paid
- what dimensions
- colors or b&w
- quantity of runthanks!

Uh. 3000 copies of a 64 page all color magazine on some decent matte stock. The size was 9.5 x 9.5, which was an odd size. The more standard the size, the cheaper. I think there was an aqueaous coating as well. I think the price was about $9000.

wow, that's great grumpy. were you happy with how it turned out?
- grumpymonkey0
I remember them being really easy to deal with. And the mags looked really good. But we printed 2 issues of this publication with them and on the last one somehow a blank signature (8 pages) got bound into about 100 copies. And they went out to stores. So we stopped using them. Kinda sucked. But mistakes do happen once in a while.
Here is another I've used. Not quite as happy with the printing from this one though. Cheap as well:
http://www.westcanpg.com/give em both a call and get some quotes.

this is all wonderful information. i've heard of westcan. i know educated community (zine) uses them. but i haven't heard any positive/negative/or prices about them. thanks again grumpy!

Here in taiwan a 16 page / colour mag at 500 copies would be roughly $440 US.
But if you went to a1000 copies it would only be $540 US

do you know a website of a printer? i'm willing to check out all options. thanks.
