who's having a hard time staying at a studio because he doesn't like getting involved in co-worker bashing so stays to himself and comes off as not a team player. He can't find much freelance where he's at and he's concerned that he might be considered old and not young and hip enough? he's unemployed right now and his self-esteem is really low at the moment.
please, thank you, hugs, kisses and lots of copped feels.

well I would tell your 'friend' to do whatever it takes to make him happy. an unhappy work environment is the worst thing to be in.....

how's he having a hard time staying at a studio and unemployed at the same time?

yup. Drains the life right out of you... like a drain.
Anyways. Tell your friend to keep their head up and find something else. With a little luck and hard work they'll find something much much better.
Oh, and if he 'looks' old. Nothing that a quick hair cut, tan and shave can't take care of. This comeing from a 29 year old whom looks like I'm 23.

i'm sorry, i meant that the reason he's usually let off from a studio has been not being a team player.

i beat you k0na, i'm 28 but i look 17-18 on "good" days :)
so, what if all he's ever known was design and he can't really think of anything else to be or wants to be? he's got a family to take care of.

start his own company?

i believe he has tried that, but I don't know if it's still "in business".

I don't think you can "tell a friend" anything really. but what you can do is just be a friend. He's broke, take his to dinner. Buy him a pint every couple of days of so. Tell him he need to keep moving on. Buy him a Depok Chopera's 7 Signs of Spritual Success. I've learned, you can't change people, unless they want to change. But you can distract them and show by example.
good luck mayo!

well we live in different towns, so the best i can do is offer advice and support from a distance. It doesn't seem like it would be enough, he's really down at the moment, so i was hoping that some people here might have some suggestions that we haven't thought of yet.
thank you everyone for helping. your suggestions are great so far.

I would tell him to find a way to blow their minds, make himself indespensible.
I was put in he same situation at a magazine, decided to play ball while looking feverishly for something else.
worked out great and it felt really good to leave
chin up, fuck em up
