Ok, I'm currently working on my new website which will have all my work listed on the index site.
Now, I'm thinking about how I should design the navigation.
What would please you more:
If you click on a portfolio item and a pop-up window appears, showing the selected project, or a complete new site opening (in the same window) with a back button to the main site.

I wouldn't like either. Why can't the portifolio item appear on the same page?

I agree. Avoid pop-ups.
Pain in the arse.

Yeah no pop-ups - maybe use an I-frame to load your images into so you dont have to hit back to view the content list.

if I have to deal with poop-ups or click back so I can go forward again do you think that will please me? NO! I will hunt you down and beat you soundly with a stick until you are dead!

I like to see the thumbnails or buttons always available along with the work

None of the above.

Same Window.
Less distracting and viewer less likely to get lost - navigation
The majority of people now are so wary of pop-ups that it may give them a subconcious negative feeling about your site - phsycology
