I'm passionate about design. I also have other hobbies that I need to spend time on. I know I have to for a healthy balance in my life.
The challenge and problem I face more and more is that design consumes my days and doesn't leave me time for anything else. It creates stress for me that causes other problems.
Does anyone have a similar feeling? Any ideas that worked for you? thanks people.

definately set aside time for those hobbies. a happy brain works better.

are you working from home? it's hard to get away when your office is next to your bed. setting limits helps.

soler -thx for the help the other day - i got it workin'
and yeah....i have the same problem some times
skating, and now snowboarding always help
are you working from home ? if so, try and neutral space
if not, and its more just a time issue, then yes, you just have to make more time for life
try and think of things like your mortality - no matter how much we all love pushing colors, type, and shapes around ( desire disguised as function ), how do we want to feel when we are old and grey - like we didn't do anything but sit in front of a computer ? HELL NO ! we will want to think that we really LIVED a live........so make some time for the spontaneoous livin'
take a trip, somewhere you've never been
that's what i'm about to do in about a month

weekend road trips usually help me. Also, taking a look at my life and seeing what i can cut out or combine in some multi-tasking really helps. A mental spring cleaning has started becoming a 2-3 times a year (if needed) habit for me. Bad people and other bad juju no longer stay for years and bring me down. I don't have time enough for myself, why would i give any to them?
Just remember what makes you happy the most and give yourself time for as much of it as possible.

i used to work from home and it eventually drove me crazy. now i do consulting 35hrs/wk on site. the rest of time is all mine, either i freelance or chill with friends.

This is something i've struggled with in the past but i've got it pretty sorted now. I make sure I go home at 6 on the dot, no hanging around.
I'm a semi pro jazz drummer as well as a designer, and I like the gym so i have my life pretty worked out nowI go to the gym each morning, work during the day and play a few gigs a week. Unfortunatley I haven't got as much time to go out and get caned or clubbing, but still get out every now and again.
You can't do everything, but at least try and fit in two things.
What are your hobbies?

Blofeldt: I also really enjoy making music, snowboard, like going to the gym, painting canvas, woodworking, going to parks w/ the dog, explore, hike, bike, thats off the top of my head...

quite a few woodworkers on here. that's cool. got any photos?

this is a great thread.
we should have "pull your fellow designer away from their desk" help groups...
like mountain biking and expolring hiking and all that good stuff...
designers meet up and chill together to get outta it all

Leave your work AT work. doing that shit at home every night when you get off work is just horrible. Yeah, freelance is cool, but it needs to be limited if you have a full time gig. I never realized how much I was once consumed until I had a kid.

Ive been working 40+ hours a week at my full time gig, as well as putting most of my nights and weekends in at my startup.
I constantly find myself very depressed, and just unhappy with my life. Though when I take time away from working so much, I feel like im slacking, and im doing something wrong, so I end up putting in all my nights and weekends again. Its a never ending cycle, and its really killing me. Ive cut myself off from all of my friends for the most part, and am just worried about getting my gig off the ground and getting that next promotion at work.
I dont know how to find peace with myself, ive tried doing less work, but that doesnt work. I need some new hobbies, or something.
Im stressed out so much, its really eating away at me.
Any suggestions? And xanex is not my answer...
