i dont know much about hitchcock to comment on that.
but watch citizen kane and make sure you watch the extras. they talk about stuff like building camera's into the phreakn ground to give look at someone from an angle to give them the appearance of an authoritive figure or something.
also death of a salesman had the innovative technique i believe of zooming in on a subject while moving backwards to make the background look wierd or something i dont remember, but if it werent for films like citizen kane, there wouldnt be stuff like pulp fiction.
show your grandchildren the matrix 40 years from now and they'l be more entertained at church...know what i mean?

I'm sorry. It must be pretty bad hearing it from someone named BobaFetus.

"like Rand said, they helped create the language of films today. Did you know that there was once a time when viewers couldn't understand the concept of films jumping from one time and place to another let alone jumping timelines and non linear concepts such as say Pulp Fiction?"
Thats exactly the point. Think of movies that introduced styles that are conventions now like the Flashback sequences that were first used in Citizen cane.

I think I like 'classics' because I'm not always familiar with the star actually being a star... films like amelie hit so hard because you are not aware of there being an 'actor' acting... if that makes any sense. Rather than, oh look there is Brad Pitt acting in another film.

point taken.

one "classic" i love is 12 angry men...
one of my all time faves

with Hitchcock, its all about style. much like an artist, he added his own special feel to his movies. there are sooo many layers to his films. yes the plot and storyline are there on the surface, but there are also underlying themes that he creates that make the movies so great! it would be way too much to type down. but i took a hitchcock film class and studied all his american films. symbolism with objects, match-cuts with sounds, film structure, psychology, cinematogoraphy, etc all of that played apart in all his "classic" movies. NOBODY was doing this at the time. he approached movie making like an artist, trying to invite the audience to dig deeper into his work.
you also have to consider that he was under contract with the same dude that put out huge movies like gone with the wind... so he would have to follow hollywood politics. But, if you look into his films you would totally see hints of rebellion to that kind of hollywood style film-making.

you're entitled to your opinion.
many films that are called classics are not contemporary now (obviously) but have to be put in their time and place to fully appreciate. This is something that not everyone wants to bother with and why should they? I do, but i love film and the whole history of it. just because i do doesn't mean anyone else should. nor should they be considered classless because they don't want to.
film is an artform and you are entitled to appreciate what's happening now without appreciating what came before or what helped to evolve it to what it is now.
there are too many 'art-snobs' in all aspects of media. let people enjoy what they will and get over yourselves if that's too hard. (just don't call yourself an expert if you have no real depth of knowledge in it's history, styles or form).

If we all liked the same thing the world would be a dull place. Personally I like listening to Frank Sinatra at work when everyone else is listening to Boards of Canada, and people get a bit excited when Aronofsky brings out a new film. I like going to the local cinema and watching re-runs of old James Stuart films (who is without a doubt the finest actor ever).
But hey variety is the spice of life. Keep persisting with 'classics' you'll like something from way back when. I guarentee you.
