Is there a better way to put a tab in, than loadsa & n b s p ;

you could probably use CSS to create a class called "tab" or something. then do then for the css maybe just set it's width. you might have to put an inside the span, since i recall some browsers wouldn't render it correctly if it's empty

yea...i rarely use blockquote, plus it looks too different cross-browser.
create a css style, or you can always resort to making a tiny transparent image which you can stretch to the desired length.
i don't know what exactly you're looking to do, so its hard to say
