Where do you think that design is going in your country?
For my part, living in Quebec, I must say that the majority of the stuff that comes out of the big studios (primarily in Montreal), is all clean and really typographic (Due to the amount of students comming out of the design program offered at the UQÀM - Universite du Quebec à Montréal). Everything kinda looks the same except for a few projects done by some studios and individuals. I'd love to see different stuff (like japanese or dutch influenced design) but the majority of people can't relate to that style.
Does a style have to stay in its "region" in order to be effective?
Discuss, please.

Whatever the next movement is I hope it involves more boobies...

fucking genius.
I think it's kid of dependent on what the your local magazine (PRINT - CA) constitutes as something worth exploiting.
Gross as it is, a lot of folk base success on whether or not your design gets in between those expensive pages, including myself, unfortunately.
In other words, check your local CA-Print annual. I believe it's a turn towards more home-grown, hand-designed art (i.e. silk screen/"rough" art) in the good old US of A.
- fuck....good topic.

Its a shame that the ratio of intelligent answers is smaller than unnesecary comments..
Oh well, hooray for NT!

as for your question of design being effective only within its region. I don't think it matters. I notice that design tends to cross borders (eventually, that is)... If a style does not change over a long period of time it blends together and no longer serves its purpose. I think often a change in style is effected by a designer seeing something brand new from a brand new location.

I'm not really speaking about design trends.
I'm trying to see if other "styles" can be effective in unfamiliar regions.

What does OPM mean?
- dippy0
are you talking about whether or not the japanese design sensibility (whatever that is) can be effective in the US, for example?

I am one who believes that style, in design, isn't good.
Looking at Sagmeister's stuff and knowing that everything he does is international without even trying is truly inspiring.
This is where, I think, design has to go. But in order to make it go there, you must be one crazy-ass talented individual.

i think you tend to see more of the same type of stuff coming from places that have similar culture. compare the quebec aesthetic you've described to the swiss international aesthetic of the 60s/70s. and now compare the cultures.
in the US things are a little more experimental.. a little more textured..
in japan things seem to be more organic, more inspired by nature.. makes a lot of sense when you look at the japanese culture.
now whether these different styles can be effective in different places? im really not that sure... but i'd think not as much.. because it really is a cultural thing.
great, great topic, thank you.
[im gonna post this, read it, and then post again probably]

"Looking at Sagmeister's stuff and knowing that everything he does is international "
that's your perception. i mean, what qualifies as being 'international'? just not looking like a style derived from a particular country?
- dippy0
"I am one who believes that style, in design, isn't good."
i think it depends on what you're designing for. Sometimes, using a particular style is an effective way to promote or say something.

"just not looking like a style derived from a particular country?"
Thats a whole other question... I am not to sure of what I mean, but for me, when looking at Mr. Sagmeister's stuff is totally unclassifiable. Wich could mean that its international, don't you think?
- nick0
yeah it is quite original. and his 'style' might be one of those that does translate well through different cultures.. but probably best in the ones he is designing for.
- dippy0
exactly, nick! "style" should be appropriate to whatever you're designing for.
