Alright l33t hax0rs, I need a recommendation. I just picked up an 80GB hard drive and a firewire enclosure yesterday. I hooked it all up and I got nothing from my iBook. However I plugged it into my Win98 crap box (via IDE, not firewire) at home and it sees the drive. But I need to know the best way to format this. Win98 is only going to let me do FAT32. I'll probably use it cross platform, but it won't totally be necessary so I'm thinking HFS+ might be the way to go. However since my iBook won't let me see the drive, I can't touch it with 'Disk Utility'. Any recommendations? Maybe something like knoppix would have the proper formatting utilities? Never used it, but I'm sure I could figure it out.

    Thanks in advance!

well you have two problems here.

    1. your mac is not seeing the HD. Sounds like an issue with the Firewire enclosure.
make sure you have it hooked up correctly (most cases require a poweradapter, make sure the jumbers are all setup properly, read the manual STEP by STEP)

    2. if you want to use the HD between Mac OS X and Windows 98 you will need to format the HD with FAT32

MAC OS X Can read and write FAT16,FAT32 and NTFS plus HFS+ of course

but windows can only read and write to Disk in a windows Format. There is no native support for HFS+ .So unless you intend to use a special program on you Windows 98 box that allows for reading mac formated disks you best bet is FAT32
