Since some of you giys have more experience with print then me i was wondering wheather you can provide me with a "quote."
I need to print 200 sets. Each set would have 500 index-cards with 2-3 sentences printed on each. Each set would be enclosed in a cardboard box with glossy color cover. How much do you think printing companies would charge for such job. And if you don't know can you recomend some cheap companies out there.
BTW, I'm located in NYC if it helps.

One arm and one leg, but that's just a guesstimate. Seriously I have no idea, what's the size of an index card?

just regular 5.5x2.5...? Or whatever indes cards are sized. I don't need the thing to be specific in size. I can go ahead with more "common" sizes as the rpoject is suppos eto be a tool for screenwriters.

The cheapest route would be doing them business card size. 3.5" x 2". In Toronto you can get cards for next to nothing, but it'll be the boxes to house the cards and the production time that will kill you.
For 200 sets of 500 cards, very roughly I'd say you'd be over $25, 000 based on $100 per set.

a what??? $100 for paper worth $3...? what the?

Surely you could get them cheaper by just going to a copying place like Kinkos for the cards, not sure where you would source the boxes. My price was based on using card stock and putting it on a press, not digital printing.

wow! that's a lot of hand work, that is the printing is nothing, its stuffing the boxes, bindery, collating, etc that will be the biotch. also, not to mention the custom box itself. just a guess but i think that would be upwards in the 8-10k range, again just a guess but this could be an expensive set. again, that's lot's of hand work (people actually organizing and building the boxes) for only 200 sets of custom boxes. i would reccomend just printing the cards, one color, and having them collate for you and you buy off the shelf boxes and put stickers on the outside. could be cheaper than say, $500 a box. also, try chinatown printers in nyc, they love gang press stuff and might cut you a good deal... just a thought

i will really depend on - how many different pieces of art there is and how many colors you are running - are they double sided - if i read it right you are looking at 100K pieces - you could probably fit 30 cards on a signature - depending on the size of the press. this kind of job would require some creative thinking on the printer side to make it cost effective. If you have 200 different pieces of artwork, pre press wll be a bich.

robotron has set you on the right track.

yeah that's what i was thinking having them print the sets and then using standard box as a carrier. Still it might be more expensive then i intended.
BTW, it's only 1 color, BW. The only thing with color would be the box.
