is it possible?
i'm really leaning on getting one...
the price is right, and it's been ages since i've owned a mac..
but a pc-biased friend of mine is warning me off of them...says they pretty much suck, and you could never really work photoshop on one...i need an objective opinion...don't want to spend money for nothing...
can a designer expect to do any real photoshop or illustrator work using a mac mini?
or is the vid card to small..bare in mind i used to use a 1st gen G4, up till last year, and thought it was fine...
;)thanks guys

don;t see why not - get some extra ram and you're golden son
- BonSeff0
i dont see why not either, its more powerful than the ibook i have now, but yeah max out the ram

is there a problem with the vid card being a ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB?
my buddy seemed to think that was shit..but hell...i dunno...beats me.....
photoshop'll run ok with something like that right?
- designerror0
you will be fine.. and yes.. fill it with ram !!!
- Gorbie0
yeah man... i'd get one in a heartbeat.
i'm really stoked because it made my old G4 worthless on the resale value.
excellent! ;^]

Yes you will be fine.... just bump the ram. I have a 1.0 ghz powerbook and it does a wonderful job.
but ya... RAM is key.
- spendogg0
on first glance i would only consider surfing the net and doing my taxes.
- BZZZP0
just be sure NOT to pay for the apple-approved ram upgrade - look at the article (off /.) about the insides of the thing and install any old 1G stick yourself.
and remember, a couple of years ago, that would have been "top of the line" - and very impressive work has been done on much less impressive hardware
what was it, 8k of ram to get a man to the moon, for ex?
- Gorbie0
i guess that more depends on what sort of monitor you'll be using, right?
- exador10
thanks for all the responses guys..
but the vid card... ATI Radeon 9200
is that ok?

It's all been said, but, ya, up the RAM and you're golden. Tell your buddy he's a Mac biggot. ;)
The only problem with the video card might be if you wanted to do some super high-end rendering or gaming or something like that. If you spent your time navigating 2D environments, there should be little to concern you.
- BZZZP0
if you start saying "i can't do good design because this computer is subpar" you have far more serious problems than monitor quality or chip speed or ram.
- Gorbie0
sounds just fine to me.
my powerbook and G4 have 32mb like that one. if the card is stressed out i believe it sucks a little of the system RAM, right?
and if you have plenty of that you should be just fine.

the monitor i have is a 20 inch compaq refurbished...
seems ok...
i've been thinking about getting the 20" cinema...

$599
+ $325 1gb ram
+ $100 superdrive
+ $79 wifi
= $1,103 + tax + s&hand you get a whopping 32mb card and no monitor and no keyboard or mouse. But a very cool looking computer it is. I wouldn't say its the best bang for your buck however.

what about using dvd-studio pro on a minimac? I'd be doing the video editing on my pc but the dvd authoring on a macmini, that seem doable?
- exador10
thanks a ton guys..
i've made my decision..a mini mac for me!!!
they in the stores yet??
- jevad0
4 week wait
