so we've all seen images keyed out with green screen...but what about when there is no green screen involved? Saw a commercial recently of basketball players, and another of musicians, some clips at least 30 years old, so I know there was no green screen involved. Any ideas or tuts out there?

painted out depending on the background a lengthy process and great to do if you have the time.
I can recommend some very good packages if you like.

packages? do tell...
I was really hoping it wouldn't involve going in frame by frame. Please tell me I'm right...I've also seen a technique where it is a rough cut, like it was cut out with scissors....I figured this might make it easier, aside from looking cool too...

Without a key (blue or green screen) you have to go frame by frame. Its called rotoscoping and its a pain. But worth it.
AE has a few other ways like keying based on lumanance, but is never really clean and you usually still have to go frame by frame and clean it up.
Creativecow.com has tutorials on rorscoping in AE.
If you look on my site in my portfolio there is a piece called "hall" I used a difference key on that. Basically I took an image of an empty hall and the difference key takes out everything that is different fromm the still.
If you want to know more Ill explain how its done. BUt even with that difference key, it took me half a day to clean up the running guy.

yeah if your shot is locked down it can be a breeze with a difference matte, otherwise you're in for some work.

yeah, i feared it might be pretty intense...so I guess they just spent many hours on these commercials, or maybe a team of people doing it?

a common trick is to use a locked down shot, which then requires no work, then take the compositied shot and add camera shake. remember the video gam commercials that were show home vid style of kids in the back yard firing off some homemade weapon? thats the technique there.

My job involves a fair amount of rotoscoping. We generaly get students in over the weekend to do it. Point being, if you've got industry deadlines a team of people is essential.

yeah, the one where they blow up the tree in the next yard? The first time i saw that, I almost fell out of my chair!
