I'lll second Papa Hayden's. Went there for sunday brunch. The chocolate bar down the street is yummy, too.

if nothing else... go to a McMenamins. Best beer and burgers I've ever had.
Makes me homesick just thinking about it.

Take your pick.. I like the Rams Head. (esp if you in the NW 23rd area). The Bagdad is amazing on the inside, catch old flicks and drink beer, what could be better?

Blue Hour is overrated, especially for the money. I'm spoiled by clarklewis. Last year I would often have lunch there at least 2x a week. So good - their prices have started going up though - but it's still affordable. It's often hard to get in for dinner - I''d recommend lunch instead.

portland seems to be a very walkable city... right?
those McMenamin's look popular. I've read something about a hotel they opened up inside an old school... anyone heard?
thanks so much peoples.

and where's the best place to guzzle some of that willamette valley, pinot noir. :^)

gorbie-
when I lived there the only hotel McMenamin's had was the Edgefield. never went there but heard it was well done.
I think the Kennedy School is the one you are refering too...NE 33rd is a bit of a hike from downtown but buses are a cinch there.

Coffee: stumptown
Happy hour eat: Kells, City Grill (cool view), Dragonfish in the Paramount hotel (sushi).
Happy hour drink: Martinis at Brazen Bean in NW
Late eats: Dots on SE Clinton (go drunk and high), and Montage.
Cheap Beer: Sanghai tunnel, Bar of the Gods, anyplace with Pabst.
Cool Bars: Mint, Aura, Saucebox, Bluehour (but cool in portland's actually lame, so be really cool and go to the 50's era driftwood for a white russian)
In between bars: Halocene or maybe Paragon
Best Botique: Lit or Seaplane
Best strip joints (Po-town luvs its strippas): Sassys (laid back and cozy) and The Acropolis (a drive, but world famous and great (cheap) steak).
Best Mexican: Chez Hose.
Fun pastimes: smoke some donk and hike through forest park, powells books, Burnside skate park, the coast, first Thursdays in the Pearl for open galleries, looking like a bum, being unemployed, partying like a rocker.

gonna go down to powells one weekend so...
how about any good galleries as well?

I've been stomping Poe'lands streets since I was a lil'pup. I love NY too, but for me small, out of the way Portland will always be home.
- fugged0
yup.
grew up in portland... eastside blah blah... love this place. it's clean and people are friendly.
love being able to drive a little over an hour in any direction and end up either in the mountains, the coast or a desert.

This place is pretty cool if you can get by all the pretensions people....

Doug Fir brings in some good music. I saw Racheal Yamagata there. The Slow Bar is along the same lines but better food and toned down.
Problem w/ bars that try and be big city hip in Portland, is that they're made fun of after a month. Alot of people are tied to grunge hip and cheap drinks. Even the hipsters here take more pride in being found at the russian bar, Arafat, or drinking in Hollywood Bowl's Lounge.
It's a odd town like that, where being cool is tied directly with laying extremely low.
