it would be foolish not to get a patent first and then approach a manufactorer?

i think there are people that will help you write out patent proposals for teh patent office. i remember seeing on tv sample proposals and they were really thorough, it was like 50 pages and there was a diagram on every page, showing how it differs from other things. i think it was for a furniture too.

designerror so what should i do first then?
i can probably build it myself

no you shouldnt
no makers will take your patented chair
they like to have licenses to produce them
just approach them and see what happens.
but in order for you to do that, you need to have a prototype done.

yea then i would have to pay these "people" loads of money i guess..:(

´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´don't bother with a patent first!
arrange a meeting with to company you choose and before showing then anything, they have to sign a contract saying that they will not use your idea in anyway or give it to others..if they like your idea, they can buy your idea for an onetime amount and pay for the patent etc. you will get 5-10% royalties for the sale or what ever you agree too..
that's how the furniture world works more or less.. so don't expect 50% of the sales and $1.000.000 for your idea. just because it's good..
if you have more questions you can drop me a mail! i'll be glad to help you out with the shit like this.. learned it the hard way!

you can always talk to a patent lawyer and check if the idea has been registered by someone else.
I've read somewhere that when Mies registered his Barcelona Chair, he got a patent based on it's construction and method of producing, not just on design.
if you are approaching manufacturers, make sure to get disclosure agreement signed by them.
i've been to many furniture trade shows. it's a tough market.
